Unit Contributor, Freelance Remote

About the Role

Join our freelance contributor team to develop engaging, student-centered, and culturally responsive educational resources that directly improve the learning experience for teachers and students.

Responsibilities

• Create comprehensive instructional units aligning with provided scope and sequence and specific learning standards, utilizing creativity to curate texts and design lesson plans.
• Review and edit draft units, providing constructive feedback and revisions based on content quality and instructional effectiveness.
• Refresh existing content collections by incorporating more relevant and up-to-date resources based on user feedback.
• Support the production pipeline through vital tasks such as migrating information, adjusting formatting, updating links, and tagging educational standards within units.

Requirements

• Proven experience writing and implementing standards-aligned lessons that build student skills and master content, especially in Social Studies, ELA, or Science.
• Demonstrated ability to curate vetted, reliable resources and provide necessary scaffolds for differentiated learning.
• Experience creating curriculum and lesson activities specifically for digital education contexts, utilizing frameworks like C3 Inquiry Model, CCSS, or NGSS.
• Deep understanding of backwards-design and objective-based planning, coupled with familiarity with strong formative assessment components.
• Commitment to developing culturally responsive and student-centered resources.
• Strong attention to detail, accuracy, and ability to meet production deadlines.

Role Context

• This role requires rich content knowledge in one or more of Newsela’s key focus areas: Social Studies, ELA, and Science.
• Candidates must be adept at responding to and implementing feedback effectively.
• Technical savvy is required to navigate and utilize various production platforms and software.
• Note: This role is compensated on a per-task basis.
