Backend Engineer - International SG (Generative AI)

About the Role

Join our Product Enablement team to build reliable, scalable backend systems that power generative AI experiences for users in China and beyond. This is a unique opportunity to solve complex technical challenges while directly contributing to Canva's global growth and local-market excellence.

Responsibilities

• Build and maintain scalable backend services supporting generative AI product capabilities.
• Design and implement robust APIs, service integrations, and internal abstractions.
• Integrate backend systems with global and local AI model providers and infrastructure.
• Collaborate with product managers, designers, and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality AI features.
• Ensure backend systems comply with strict privacy and security standards across international markets.
• Proactively address technical debt and optimize system performance through code reviews and bug fixes.

Requirements

• Proficiency in Java with a strong understanding of backend fundamentals like REST APIs, microservices, and event-driven architecture.
• Proven experience building and maintaining scalable backend services in a production environment.
• Strong focus on code quality, maintainability, and performance.
• Collaborative mindset with the ability to work effectively across cross-functional teams.
• Fluent in English with the ability to thrive in a global, diverse work environment.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with cloud infrastructure such as AWS or GCP.
• Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment processes.
• Exposure to generative AI, LLMs, or machine learning platforms.
• Experience with phased rollouts and experimentation in production systems.
