Backend Engineer (Ruby)

About the Role

Responsibilities

• Lead backend features from concept through release, owning flows, APIs, and data models for agent-generated work items and code.
• Develop evaluation and benchmarking systems to measure workflow quality and efficiency.
• Build reliable production systems using Ruby on Rails and Python, integrating with LLM APIs and AI gateways.
• Collaborate with product, design, and users to shape scope and make technical trade-offs.
• Coordinate projects, mentor engineers, and contribute to technical direction.

Requirements

• Strong Ruby on Rails experience in a large production codebase and production experience with Python.
• Proven ability to drive substantial projects with multiple engineers, delivering clear outcomes.
• Product mindset with experience owning features end-to-end, including scope shaping and user engagement.
• Full-stack background with a backend focus, capable of designing effective APIs and reading frontend code.
• Strong API design and SQL fundamentals.
• Experience with AI-assisted development.
• Ability to work independently, collaborate effectively, and provide technical leadership.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with GraphQL.
• Experience with PostgreSQL performance at scale.
• Experience building and evaluating large language model or agent systems.
