Engineering Manager, Data Engineering

About the Role

Lead a talented team to design and scale data services and frameworks, powering product experiences and AI capabilities at Zapier. This role is crucial for making data accessible, reliable, and impactful across our fast-growing ecosystem.

Responsibilities

• Lead, coach, and grow a distributed team of engineers focused on building scalable, reusable data systems and APIs.
• Define the architectural vision for how data is ingested, processed, served, and accessed across Zapier, driving simplicity, scalability, and self-service.
• Champion the creation of frameworks and abstractions that enable engineers across Zapier to safely self-serve data capabilities.
• Ensure data pipelines, APIs, and services meet high standards for quality, performance, and uptime, establishing operational metrics and incident practices.
• Uphold security, privacy, and compliance standards, driving automation, reliability, and continuous improvement across the data platform.
• Collaborate effectively across Product, Engineering, and other teams to ensure alignment and drive collaborative success.

Requirements

• 8+ years of experience in data and/or software engineering, including 3+ years in a people management role.
• Proven experience building and scaling data or backend systems in cloud environments.
• Strong leadership and strategic planning skills, with a track record of managing technical teams and aligning data capabilities with business objectives.
• Strong software engineering background, understanding how to design and operate APIs, distributed systems, and data-serving layers.
• Skilled in stakeholder management, adept at translating complex technical concepts for diverse audiences.
• Fluency in AI and its implications, using it to enhance team productivity and understanding its impact on business priorities and technical strategy.
• Prioritization of quality, observability, and reliability in system design.
• Ability to default to action, shipping simple, working solutions and iterating as needed.
• Excellence in leading and developing people, providing coaching, feedback, and fostering growth.
