Engineering Manager, State (Stateful Services)

About the Role

Lead a high-performing team responsible for Zapier's critical data storage infrastructure, ensuring scalability, reliability, and alignment with company goals to maintain customer trust. This strategic role involves owning and evolving core data stores and advising across engineering teams.

Responsibilities

• Lead, mentor, and grow a senior engineering team focused on Zapier's data storage infrastructure.
• Own and evolve critical data stores, including MySQL, Postgres, ElastiCache, and Redis.
• Set technical direction, drive execution, and ensure the reliability and scalability of stateful services.
• Collaborate cross-functionally to enable robust platform capabilities as Zapier scales.
• Advise engineering teams across Zapier on best practices for designing and implementing stateful services.
• Proactively identify and resolve storage scalability challenges to support business growth.
• Act as a strategic owner for the team's domain, defining priorities and roadmap in the absence of a dedicated Product Manager.

Requirements

• Proven experience as an Engineering Manager, successfully leading and developing senior engineering teams.
• Deep expertise in data storage infrastructure and stateful services, with hands-on experience with technologies like MySQL, Postgres, ElastiCache, or Redis.
• Strong ability to define technical strategy, drive execution, and deliver reliable, scalable systems.
• Excellent communication and collaboration skills, capable of influencing and advising across multiple engineering teams.
• Demonstrated ability to anticipate and solve complex scalability and reliability challenges in a distributed systems environment.
