Intermediate Backend Engineer (Ruby)

About the Role

Join our globally distributed Project Management team to build features that shape how thousands of users plan and execute work using the GitLab DevSecOps Platform.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate closely with Product and Design counterparts to finalize requirements and break down projects into smaller iterations.
• Create Proof of Concepts for complex work, ensuring quality by writing extensive tests and rolling out changes.
• Iterate and ship small features and improvements with minimal guidance.
• Craft code meeting high standards for style, maintainability, and best practices in a high-scale web environment.
• Support other engineers and advocate for quality during code reviews.
• Recognize and propose solutions for technical debt as part of the Engineering Backlog Rotation.
• Nurture our open-source community by preparing issues for contributors and reviewing contributions.

Requirements

• Professional experience with Ruby on Rails.
• Experience in PostgreSQL database design and optimization.
• Experience in REST API and GraphQL development.
• Familiarity with distributed, scalable, and reliable systems.
• Proficiency in English, both written and verbal, for success in a remote, asynchronous environment.
• Strong communication skills for explaining complex technical concepts to diverse stakeholders.
• Experience working in a highly agile, iterative software development process.

Nice-to-Haves

• Knowledge of Elasticsearch and NoSQL database technologies.
• Experience with GitLab CI/CD workflows.
• Computer science education or equivalent experience.
• Open source contributions.
