About the Role

Join our team as an Intermediate Site Reliability Engineer specializing in Database Operations, where you will be crucial in maintaining the smooth and reliable operation of GitLab's production database systems. This role blends pragmatic operational expertise with sound engineering principles to ensure our critical user-facing services run flawlessly.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the reliability, performance, and availability of production database systems.
• Monitor, troubleshoot, and resolve database-related incidents and performance bottlenecks.
• Develop and implement automation for database provisioning, scaling, and maintenance tasks.
• Collaborate with engineering teams to design, optimize, and scale database schemas and queries.
• Participate in on-call rotations to support critical production systems.

Requirements

• Proven experience in database administration and operations, preferably with PostgreSQL.
• Strong understanding of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) principles and practices.
• Proficiency in scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ruby, Go) for automation.
• Experience with cloud infrastructure platforms (e.g., AWS, GCP, Azure).
• Solid problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to system reliability.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience with distributed database systems or sharding.
• Familiarity with observability tools and practices (monitoring, logging, tracing).
• Knowledge of configuration management tools (e.g., Chef, Ansible, Terraform).
