Senior Backend Engineer

About the Role

Join DuckDuckGo as a Senior Backend Engineer to design, build, and scale the critical infrastructure that powers our privacy-focused search engine and services used by millions globally.

Responsibilities

• Design, implement, and maintain high-performance, scalable, and reliable backend services using Go and Rust.
• Contribute to architectural decisions, ensuring our systems meet stringent requirements for availability, latency, and security.
• Collaborate closely with frontend engineers, product managers, and other stakeholders to define technical roadmaps and deliver features.
• Mentor junior engineers, conduct thorough code reviews, and champion best practices in software development and operational excellence.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex production issues across our distributed systems.

Requirements

• 5+ years of professional experience in backend software development, focusing on building large-scale, distributed systems.
• Deep expertise in at least one modern systems programming language, preferably Go or Rust.
• Proven experience with relational and/or NoSQL databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, Cassandra).
• Strong understanding of cloud infrastructure (AWS preferred) and containerization technologies (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Excellent grasp of system design principles, data structures, and algorithms.

Nice-to-Haves

• Experience working with search technologies (e.g., Elasticsearch, Solr).
• Familiarity with privacy-enhancing technologies or security best practices.
• Contributions to open-source projects.
