Staff Production Engineer

About the Role

Join our Production Engineering team to solve complex reliability challenges at scale, writing software that directly improves the performance and resilience of Canva's global infrastructure. You will work embedded within product teams to shape technical strategy and build systems that support millions of users.

Responsibilities

• Own high-risk technical domains by embedding with product teams to address sharding, resource utilization, and distributed systems challenges.
• Write production-grade software to instrument, refactor, and rebuild critical system components.
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to mentor engineers and improve overall system reliability.
• Drive platform improvements by seeding shared capabilities that scale beyond individual team engagements.
• Focus on customer-centric outcomes, including reducing incident severity, improving latency, and enhancing overall user experience.

Requirements

• Extensive experience managing reliability within large-scale distributed systems.
• Proficiency in systems-level programming languages such as Java, Go, Rust, or C++.
• Deep understanding of distributed systems patterns, including consistency tradeoffs, failure modes, and replication.
• Strong expertise in Linux internals, networking stacks, and cloud infrastructure (AWS).
• Proven ability to debug unfamiliar, complex codebases and implement lasting fixes.
• Experience with container orchestration (Kubernetes) and advanced observability tooling.

Nice-to-Haves

• Background in Enterprise SaaS environments with a focus on production engineering.
• Deep knowledge of JVM internals, including garbage collection tuning and thread profiling.
• Experience with multi-region data store migrations or sharding strategies.
• Practical experience with kernel-level instrumentation or eBPF.
